Regarded as "one of the top cross-country ski resorts in North America" by Snow Country Magazine®, The BALSAMS Grand Resort Hotel offers 95 kilometers of cross-country ski trails, 85 of which are tracked and groomed. With only a few exceptions, the trails are groomed 14 feet wide with two diagonal lanes and a wide skate lane down the middle. Proficient striders and skaters can ride the rolling terrain at race pace and never crowd out the less adventurous novice.
Where most mountains restrict beginners to only a few trails on exposed windblown terrain, one third of this trail system is marked green for those just learning. Well-situated, heated shelters invite friends and families to ski together all day long without venturing off the novice trails. Almost half of the trail system is labeled blue for intermediate and advanced skiers. The remaining trails are devoted to advanced and expert skiers and offer some of the steepest terrain in New England.
The trail system traverses the resort's 15,000-acre private estate featuring unforgettable views and unspoiled wilderness. Ski loops of varying length and difficulty have been developed within the cross-country trail system. A state-of-the-art topographical Trail Map and Guide clearly and accurately displays the entire system, with helpful hints and interesting explanations along the way.
